Lesson 9

Dear Teni,
Thank you for your ninth message. My comments and corrections follow.
Sincerely,
Prof. Sue Garreis

Dear Prof. Susan Garreis
Hello
Long time no see. How are you?
> "Long time, no see" is a wonderful slang phrase. Since we practice slang and more complex English, that is an acceptable greeting after our absence. Of course, you know that in more formal communications something like "It's been a long time since we last talked" is more appropriate.

Autumn is coming. What is the weather where you live like? In Japan, the weather is cool. It is about 20 degree C.
I returned to school today.

Thank you for your reply.

Taking a friend with me when I bought the new computer was also a way of saving money. He is a "techie" (one very knowledgeable about computers), so he could advise me as to what I needed and what I didn't.
-> It's good to have a friend who is the techie.
I also have friend who is a computer programmer. He taught me a lot about programming.

I really prefer using the mouse. But I know that touch screens are the way of the future, so I am getting used to touch screens.
-> I think It will be 3d touch screen in the future.
> Oh, heavens! 3-D touch screens! I can't even imagine! I am still amazed by 3-D printers and their use in medical science and surgery to print implants for use in humans. Here's a link about some of the developments in 3-D printing for medicine: http://www.livescience.com/26853-3d-printing-medicine.html.

It is a slide show, so just click on the "next" button. The English may be complex. To get an idea of what is happening, just read the large text as you go from slide to slide.
Here's a link re 3-D touch screens: http://www.extremetech.com/computing/150110-microsoft-research-shows-off-force-feedback-3d-touchscreen. The English is complex, but I suspect you will want to read it. Have you seen one in action? Have you used one?

I had never heard of jailbreaking before. Thanks for telling me about it. After reading the Wikipedia article, I can understand why people jailbreak. My phone is much more simple, so I don't need to jailbreak. I do not download much of anything on it. I never use it to read email or Facebook. The screen is too small for me.
-> I think it's just a regular phone to make calls and messages.

Wow! Two terabytes of space for photos! I can't even imagine that many photos. You can probably store videos there, too, right? Videos take a lot more space than photos.
-> I use it to store photos, videos, computer programs and data.

I remember that I had a lot of trouble adjusting to a Windows environment from a DOS environment.
-> It has a lot of advertising when you click on IE or firefox.

people.uncw.edu/pattersone/121/labs/L1_MSDOS_Primer.pdf.
-> Thanks for your link.

Have you seen fireworks?
-> Yes, I have.

What was the occasion?
I saw fireworks for the New Year in Vietnam and the fireworks festival in Japan.
> I bet both were spectacular shows.

Where did you see the fireworks?
I had seen fireworks in Vietnam and Japan.

With best wishes
Nguyen Hung Thien

1. Why is the Statement of Cash Flows important to U.S. users of accounting information?

Welcome back for the second half of the course!
You get a break from the homework, since I will do Cash Flow Statement next week. I commented on the homework you sent this week, so you do not need to redo it.
What did you do this summer? Did you have a chance to go home?
I did nothing special this summer.
--- I continued to work at my new job. While I have worked with Excel a lot, it has been a while, so it took a little bit of time to get back to speed. Fortunately, we do not use anywhere near all the complexities of Excel. I work a little bit with Access, so I do not hesitate to use the Help screens to refresh my memory there. Fortunately, we do not need to do anything fancy with Access. I have never worked in internal accounting before, so making journal entries and using a General Ledger software package is a new experience for me. It is good to exercise my brain that way.
---I watched the weeds take over my yard. We had a relatively cool summer with more rain than in preceding years. I loved it and so did the weeds. In two months the grounds became a forest. It is difficult for me to work in heat, and it is harder for me to work for hours at anything physical any more. So the weeds won the battle this year. However, three weeks ago I hired two guys from my landscaping company to get rid of the weeds. It took them nine working days, eight hours each day, to get rid of the weeds. I never could have done that. Most of the weeds were six to nine feet tall. Fortunately, they did not have deep roots.
It was a very quiet and enjoyable summer.
Fall (autumn) begins on Tuesday, September 23, in the U.S. The weather has already turned cooler. It is about twenty-five degrees Celsius in the daytime and fifteen degrees Celsius in the night. I love it! The leaves have not yet begun to change color. With the cooler weather, though, that will happen soon.
